North East Lighthouses - Four Black and White Photographs - Roker - Souter - Herd Groyne - St Mary's
St Mary's Lighthouse is on the tiny St Mary's (or Bait) Island, just north of Whitley Bay on the coast of North East England. The small rocky tidal island is linked to the mainland by a short concrete causeway which is submerged at high tide.
Roker Pier Lighthouse at the pier head was completed in 1903. Its distinctive stripes are of naturally coloured red and white Aberdeen Granite. When built it was said to be Britain's most powerful port lighthouse.
Souter Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in the village of Marsden in South Shields, Tyne & Wear, England. Souter was the first lighthouse in the world to be actually designed and built specifically to use alternating electric current, the most advanced lighthouse technology of its day. First lit in the 1870s, Souter was described at the time as 'without doubt one of the most powerful lights in the world'.
The Herd Groyne Lighthouse was built in 1882 and shows a series of lights indicating directions to be taken upon entering the port's breakwater walls. This system of coloured lights replaced the 2 range or 'high and low' lights at South Shields that would have Shown safe passage by being aligned; these still exist in fantastic condition, with many original features.
